trains, railroads, real & models
This is a page to follow the development of my model railroad layout. One of the too many hobbies I have. I hope to take digital photos of the construction process and post them here.
I am hoping that I can involve the kids in this process and that they enjoy it. I have a whole bunch of models - both rolling stock and structures, so the cash outlay should be minimal. Mostly I need to buy the wood and foam for building the layout. I even think I have most of the track I need.
- 30 Jan 2005 Okay.... I like this plan even better now. Hmmm... This is closer to what I want. There is a town area for industry switching, a locomotive facility area with a turn table and roundhouse, and an interchange track for traffic. This may be close to what will get built.
- 25 Jan 2005 Well, now I have another plan that I think I like better. It's more an around the room type, but there is a city area with plenty of switching. Here is the pdf file. I'm going to noodle on this one a bit and see, but I think it might be close.
- 19 Jan 2005 After thinking it over and a few comments from the kids, I'm not sure a point to point layout is what I should build. I think a switching layout would be fun, but being able to just watch the trains run could be fun too. So I figured out a way to make an around the room layout. Here is the pdf of the rough draft. I'm sure I'll be making many modifications to this plan.
- 12 Jan 2005 First draft of a track plan that I am happy with. You can view it as a pdf file. I'm sure there will be changes in the future.
- 7 Jan 2005 Added the first page of images. Here are the before pictures. Looks like I need to do some cleaning and rearranging before I can get started.
- 5 Jan 2005 I have purchased a copy of Track Planning for Realistic Operation, Third Edition (since I have lost my old copy) and have started sketching layout designs. It's going to be a shelf layout on the South side of the attic along 7 walls (it goes into a dormer) with widths of 18" and 24". Lots of switching, but not too much scenery. Maybe.
- 1 Jan 2005 Negotiations for right of way and capital expenditure have begun and look promising. I belive that I may actually begin building a model railroad in the attic in the near future!
