31 July 05 - Another Update Print E-mail
Monday, 01 August 2005
Well, it's been a while since I added an update and I did do some work on the sidecar project this weekend, so here we go.

In the last update, I had pulled the forks apart and needed to get some fork oil. So I bought some fork oil and put the front end back together again.

Then I pulled the rear wheel off to check the swingarm bearings.

The Haynes manual says to take the wheel off and disconnect the shocks. Then check for play in the bearings by trying to move the final drive from side to side.

So I did. It wasn't difficult. The bearings did not appear to have any play in them, so I left them alone. I would have repacked them (and probably will later) but I will need to replace the seals when I do that and I don't want to buy new seals right now.

While the wheel was off I drained and refilled the final drive unit. Then I put the rear end back together again.

Yesterday I rolled the rig out into the driveway and washed it again. (The sidecar was pretty dusty and the Roz had washed the bike last time, so it didn't get very clean.) I also sprayed the engine with Foamy Engine Bright, so it looks much nicer now too.

After I washed the rig, I waxed it. Man does it look nice now. The paint still has chips here and there and the gas tank has dents and dings on both sides, but the bike and sidecar gleam now!

I also bought some Feline Odor Remover to try and get rid of the cat pee smell (the inside of the sidecar and the seat cushions smell really bad.) I sprayed all over the inside of the sidecar and the seat.

The sidecar smells better ( but still stinks a little), but I think the seat cushions are a total loss. I'm going to have to take them somewhere and get them re-upholstered. :( Hope that doesn't cost too much.

All that's really left to do is to fabricate mounts for the steering damper and to make a new rear brake pedal. (One of the sidecar mounts is in the way with the stock pedal, but we can go under it.)

Oh yeah, and get the title. Wish that would hurry up.
